    Unimatrix Zero

This Card-Review article was written by openCards user RedDwarf and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)".

"Assimilation makes us all friends." - Borg Queen.

In Brad's recent article, he wrote about "Carrots, Sticks and Grease" with regard to designing cards. Unimatrix Zero is definitely one of the cards that falls into the latter category. It is a six-cost event that can be played for a reduced cost, depending on the number of unique Borg personnel you command. Once in your core, it also gives the Alternate Universe icon to every unique Borg personnel you command. That checks off the "4 or more" mechanic as well as the Alternate Universe mechanic, but there is a third part of the card that will really have Borg players drooling.

Once a Borg player has played this non-unique event to his or her core, he or she may spend an additional counter each turn. With the release of In a Mirror, Darkly, it will be possible to have up to 14 different unique Borg personnel in your deck. If you couple this fact with the four different Drones that can download an event, then the sight of a Borg player quickly spending ten counters each turn is going to become a common occurrence.

There are also several other reasons to add this card to your Borg deck. First, there are currently no Borg personnel who have the Alternate Universe (or Past or Future) icon. This means that you are going to need Unimatrix Zero to get past some of the "stick" cards, and for use with the "carrot" cards. Interphasic Effects has already been spoiled, but you will also want Alternate Universe icons for cards like Reflections, Predicament and Brutal Experiments. The second reason to add Unimatrix Zero to your deck is because it has a cost of six. With Unimatrix Zero and a high-cost ship in hand, you will have a choice of what to discard should you face, or be playing, Gorgan. The final reason to add Unimatrix Zero to your deck is for use with the Defragmentation Drone. Picture this: You're about to attempt a mission, and have Unyielding in your core, but no cards in hand. All you would have to do is destroy Unimatrix Zero, with the Defragmentation Drone, and you'll have six new cards in hand to help you past dilemmas. Problem solved.

So there you go. Unimatrix Zero is a dream of a Borg card... which has absolutely nothing to do with assimilation.
