Charlie Plaine - Day 3 Worlds (8th seed, North American Continental Champion)
1-2 vs. Blake Mandalis, eliminated in Round 1

After seeing speed decks win event after event, it was quite refreshing to see Charlie's Infiltrators do so well at Origins. It was not a giant leap of the imagination that he would be playing the same deck in Day 3. But like Commander Riker, Charlie had read Sun Tzu: "Attack him where he is unprepared; appear where you are not expected."

Charlie had prepared to use his Dominion Infiltrators, until he saw his first round matchup: fellow Ohioan Blake Mandalis. Blake was part of the group that Charlie had used when playtesting his deck for Origins. After being sure that Blake's tried-and-true Deep Space 9 deck would be able to find a way around the massive attribute shortages of the Infiltrators, Charlie fell back on another archetype he had been successful with in the past: a Bajoran solver. He included enough tricks to keep his opponent guessing, among them a copy of Odo, Constable to keep his own Infiltrators at bay if he ended up facing Brian Sykes.

Had Charlie been more concerned with defeating Blake first, he might have fared better; after two hard-fought games, Blake took the third game and advanced to the quarterfinals. Charlie was one of three higher-seeded players to fall in the first round, but after organizing and coordinating Trek Organized Play for a year, he went home with the admiration and thanks of his fellow players.
