Aefvadh! Bet you thought I was never going to do another actual card review. Well, for a while, so did I - I've been writing card extras forever, or so it seems. But I'm done writing those now (at least till the next expansion), so I'm back with a genuine Romulan Review! One of my favorite cards in the Fajo Collection was the dual-affiliation Sisters of Duras, who make it into most of my Romulan decks these days (what, you thought I was using them as Klingons ?!). Imagine my delight when Deep Space Nine brought us this lovely little ship to match them...
Small and obsolete it may be, but the Cha'Joh is almost comparable to a Romulan Science Vessel (8-5-6) and improves on the WEAPONS and SHIELDS of the existing Romulan Scouts, though with 2 less RANGE. If you want a speedy force of small ships with no staffing requirements, you could do worse than to start with the Cha'Joh. It even has a cloaking device (unlike any other Romulan ship below D’deridex Class), and while it has no tractor beam, you can easily add one if needed with Activate Tractor Beam.
While all the D'deridexes have their matching commanders, the smaller Romulan vessels were on their own until now. This ship has not one, but two matching commanders. So what, you say, so does the U.S.S. Defiant, or even the Bajoran Assault Vessel. True, but unlike the Defiant, the Cha'Joh can benefit from both commanders at once. Put the Sisters of Duras aboard Cha'Joh, and get +4 RANGE from Defiant Dedication Plaque, and +6 WEAPONS and +6 SHIELDS from Captain’s Log. Stats of 11-11-11 are pretty phenomenal for a "small, obsolete" ship with no staffing requirements. With no one else (or only Non-Aligneds) aboard, you can switch the affiliation of the ship and her commanders simultaneously, to suit your current needs for attacks or mission attempts. If you don't have the Sisters, you can use Lursa and B'Etor from the premiere set with the ship in Klingon mode, or with a treaty, in Romulan mode (you'll also need a Romulan aboard).
Because it is a Scout Vessel, the Cha'Joh may be downloaded for Scout Encounter; you'll have to staff it with universal crew, of course, but once it's in play, a Ready Room Door will get your matching commander(s) on board. And even the Klingons can use it, in Klingon mode so they can attack any adversary, or in Romulan mode to trigger Quantum Singularity Lifeforms.
The Major's Combos:
- Cha'Joh + Sisters of Duras + Defiant Dedication Plaque: The perfect flagship for a Romulan Science Vessel armada.
- Cha'Joh + Scout Encounter + Batrell: Klingons get Scout Encounter without an otherwise useless ship in the deck.
