    Jeremiah Hayes, Diligent Major

This Card-Review article was written by Scott Baughman and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)" at Feb 28th, 2007.

Jeremiah Hayes, Diligent Major is one of those deceptive cards. At first, he doesn't look like much. His skills – Honor, Leadership, Officer, Security – are almost telegraphed by his actions in the Star Trek: Enterprise episodes he graced. It should be noted, however, that Officer and Leadership are not the most common skills amongst Starfleet personnel. And Leadership has some real benefits for the affiliation with cards like Vulcan Tricorderimage.

Hayes also has the added benefit of one of the most "loaded" keywords in the Star Trek Second Edition game – MACO. His interaction with cards like Sascha Money and Nelson Kemperimage will be huge. But it is the game text on Hayes that really makes him standout. He has a personal warp drive, as it were.

The interrupt Warp Speed Transferimage was always seen as a pretty good card. The ability to add personnel to a mission attempt after the attempt has already begun is incredibly powerful. This way, you get to break one of the fundamental rules of the game: the opponent getting dilemmas based on the number personnel in your attempt. Since Hayes isn't present at the start of the mission, he doesn't get counted. He's the ultimate back-up guy.

Plus, there are a few dilemmas out there that Hayes can just laugh at, like Worn-Out Welcomeimage for instance. If Hayes is the guy selected, you can just place him back at the (planet) mission. Do note, however, that you have to have a MACO facing a dilemma to use Hayes' text. Did you just lose a key Leadership personnel, like, say, Johnathan Archer, Headstrong Captain, to a nasty dilemma like Assassination Attemptimage, Hard Timeimage or the like? Send Hayes over as back-up.

The relationship between Phlox, Alien Physiologistimage and Hayes couldn't be sweeter. If somehow Hayes ends up about to die, have Dr. Phlox save him. Sure, he'll get sent back to HQ. But if you've got another MACO left in the attempt, and you have at least one more dilemma to face, Hayes will really impress with his recovery time – coming right back to work.

So, just make sure you complete a space mission first, and your MACO deck will have a real heavy hitter always waiting in the wings. But, hey, you're playing Starfleet, you were going to complete a space mission first anyway, right? If you pull that off, this is one shark who can really take the teeth out of your opponent's dilemmas!
